So here’s the whole story: For several months now I’ve been using a browser I downloaded called Yandex. I’ve got several browsers are my PC, from Explorer, to Firefox, to Google Chrome, to Safari, and several others. I just like checking out different browsers, seeing how they work, and then using some for different activities. I’d been using Yandex primarily for social networking, using the hotmail account that I created for Facebook, Pinterest, Tumblr, Kickstarter and, of course, Twitter. Everything had been working fine, no problems, until yesterday morning I tried to log into my Twitter account. Usually I’d be automatically logged in to Twitter, and my other websites, when I open the browser, but I didn’t think it was too unusual that I suddenly needed to manually log in. I’ve had this happen with all browsers, occasionally you’ll be logged out of some site, and need to manually log in again.
But it told me my email or password was invalid. At first I thought maybe I just typed the password wrong, maybe misspelled it, so I tried again, it didn’t work. I have several variations of my password that I used for different websites, so I tried a few others thinking maybe I’d forgotten which password I use for Twitter, but nothing worked. So then I click the link to reset my password. It tells you to enter your email or user name. I entered my hotmail address and it said “email is invalid.”
Now I was really confused. So I put in my user name and it said “We’ve sent password reset instructions to your email address.” Well, nothing went to my hotmail address, and I made sure to check the spam folder. Just for the heck of it, I also checked my gmail, yahoo, and even aol accounts, to see if it was possible that I’d used one of those emails for Twitter, and just forgot. NOPE.
So now I’m like, what the Hell is going on? I tried contacting Twitter support for hacked accounts, but all their instructions were about ways to reset your password. But whomever hacked me must have also changed my log-in email. I figured all I could do at this point was create another account. I’d still try seeing if I could get my original account back, just to shut it down, but in the meantime life must go on. So using a new email address, I signed up for Twitter again. I tried to get the name “chacebook”, since the majority of my tweets are just links to posts on this blog, but someone already has that, even though they’re not even active. So I used “chacebookTweets”. So I set that up during my lunch break at work, and when I got home last night I went to my original account so I could go through the list of whom I was following, and re-follow them on my new account. While I was doing that, I suddenly noticed a new tweet from that account. And it was in Russian! I checked back again about an hour later, there was another Russian tweet. So somebody hacked my account, changed the email and password, and is now tweeting from it in Russian.
Did I mention that the Yandex Browser which I had been using was made in Russia? COINCIDENCE? Possibly. Possibly not. I felt like it was all a set-up. Get people to use the browser so they can track all your info from it and then use it to hack you. Well, I immediately changed the emails and passwords for every site I’d been using on Yandex, and then deleted that browser from my PC. Then I went to sleep.
But the insanity continues. This morning I get up and continue following people on my new Twitter account, then suddenly a message pops up saying I can’t follow anyone because my account has been suspended. Apparently the reason is for “aggressive manual following behavior”. So Twitter thinks my new account might be SPAM, because I’m following so many people at once. But the only reason I’m trying to follow so many people is because a real spammer stole my original account!
Oh, the irony.
So I sent some messages to Twitter, but am still waiting to be un-suspended. And that’s where I stand right now. As of 3:10pm December 24th, my new Twitter account is suspended, over false suspicion of being a SPAM account, while my original Twitter account is currently still active, and has been tweeting random messages in Russian all day long. Fuck it.
Well, hopefully, it will change soon. But to be clear to anyone who was following or being followed by me before, the Twitter account @chacethibodeaux is no longer mine. I still hope to get it shut down completely, but I don’t know if that will ever happen. Even if I managed to get access to it again, I’d just deactivate it. So, either way, I’ll never been using that account again. My official account, until further notice is, @chacebookTweets. As of this writing, it is suspended, but once that is lifted I will be using it again, tweeting from it, and following people on it.
Hopefully everyone else is having a better Christmas Eve.
