Five Fun Facts About ME

Well, I guess you’ll have to be the judge if these are “fun” facts or not…

1) I’M A MEMBER OF GENERATION X
And that’s the only hint you’re getting as to how old I am. I’m somewhere between 44 and 59. And I’m often told I look young for my age. Most of my favorite pop culture, from music to movies to TV is from the 1980s and 1990s (and, yes, Phil Collins is awesome). After the year 2000 I started slowly but surely morphing into a grumpy old man who can’t relate to what “the kids” are watching to listening to anymore.

Seriously, I remember when award shows like the Grammys and MTV Video Awards were appointment television for me every year, now I can’t even remember the last time I tried watching an entire ceremony, because I’m not going to recognize at least 75% of the performers or nominees.

2) I’M LEFT-HANDED
Although I guess technically I’m not fully left-handed. I write and eat with my left hand, but I do everything else with my right hand. I’ve yet to meet anyone else who is like that, not even in my family, everyone else seems to be all one way or the other.

3) I’M A GREEN BELT IN KARATE
Specifically in Gōjū-ryū Karate, which is the style that Mr. Miyagi taught Daniel in The Karate Kid films. And, yes, that film was what sparked my interest in martial arts (well, that and all those cheesy Ninja movies I watched in the 80s). But I eventually lost interest and didn’t continue my training, and haven’t seriously even practiced my moves in quite a long time. I can still decently punch and do front kicks, but my legs and hips aren’t ready for side or roundhouse kicks these days.

4) I CAN’T SWIM
I never tried to learn. It’s a combination of the fear of drowning, plus I just don’ like getting into large bodies of water, be it a pool or the ocean, that other people are in. I mean, I don’t know what they’re doing in there! Keep those bodily fluids away from me!

5) I LOST MY VIRGINITY TO ONE OF MY TEACHERS WHEN I WAS 14,.
Yes, this was back when this sort of thing was considered rare and shocking, and generally just wasn’t talked about. Now pretty much every day you can read in the news about some female teacher somewhere getting arrested for banging one of her students. Anyway, unlike those other kids, I kept my mouth shut. And of course, I thought it was awesome at the time, but now I look back and think what the bloody Hell was wrong with that chick?!? That’s gross! And no I would not want my son (if I had one) experience that.

Did it screw me up? Well, I was pretty shy after that. Didn’t date through High School, didn’t go to Prom or anything like that. Didn’t have sex again (with a woman my own age), until I was 20. So…there you go.

I hope you enjoyed this list.
