This episode, written by Karen O’Hara and directed by Chris Tudor, marks the second time that Veronica (Angela Nicholas) is a participant in the story (the first time was in the season one episode Homework). We also learn that her last name is Dean, and before she became a radio host, she was a tax attorney.
First, I have to say that this is an interesting career progression: going from tax attorney to “sex tutor” to hosting a late-night radio show about sex. I feel like there could be a whole softcore movie just based on that story.
The episode begins with Veronica opening her show, with the topic being the question: have you ever thought you knew what you wanted but found out you were wrong? A woman calls in and turns the question around to Veronica, who decides to tell of her past experience. This is years earlier; it doesn’t say how long when she had recently moved to California. She says that when she had turned “thirtysomething,” she thought what she wanted was younger men in their twenties because they were “uncomplicated, energetic, and gorgeous,” unlike men her own age, who just didn’t do it for her. At this point, she was in a casual but apparently monogamous relationship with Ben (Chris Evans), who was an underwear model. We get two scenes of them having hot sex, but it’s also made clear that they don’t have anything in common other than that.
One day, she goes to an art gallery and meets the man who runs the studio, Jack Mayes (played by Brad Bartram, who previously played a man named Jack in the season one episode: Warrior Princess). He’s charming and shares her interest in photography, and the sparks fly between them, despite him being “over 40.” When Ben had to go away to a modeling gig in Milan for a month, Veronica started spending time with Jack. It’s innocent at first, going to various art shows, and one night he cooks her dinner in his house. After revealing his own experience as a photographer, Jack convinces Veronica to let him take some modeling pictures of her, which culminates in him displaying a black and white portrait of her in his studio. The night before Ben is due to return, Veronica and Jack can no longer deny their feelings for each other and finally make love. The next day, when Ben arrives, Veronica breaks up with him, which Ben takes surprisingly well, and then we see Veronica back in bed with Jack.
The episode ends back at the radio station, with Veronica telling the caller that she learned from this that one should never judge a book by its cover, although she doesn’t mention whether or not she’s still with Jack.
Angela Nicholas was one of my favorite softcore stars of this era, so seeing her in the spotlight was a treat. In addition to the four sex scenes, we get a scene of Veronica coming out of the shower and rubbing lotion on her naked body, making this one of the highlight episodes of season 2. Chacebook rating: FIVE STARS
