SEX AT FIRST SIGHT

Written by April White and Edward Gorsuch, and directed by Janus Macknudson, this 2009 film from MRG Entertainment/Mainline Releasing stars Beverly Lynne as Helena, a woman who is just starting to go through a divorce.

Aurora Snow plays Helena’s friend Chelsea, who is letting Helena stay with her in her house, after Helena left her husband David, who is played by Marcus London. Darryl Hanah plays Kristen, a therapist whom Helena is regularly seeing to deal with the end of her marriage. And, rounding out the cast, are Christian Cage and Raymond Balboa as Marco and Tanner, two guys that Chelsea regularly has casual sex with.

So the story, such as it is, is that Helena left David because she found out that he was cheating on her. It’s not explained how she found out, but she’s pretty certain despite not having any proof. But these means she can’t use it in their divorce and is afraid that David, who is randomly accusing her have cheating, is going to take all of her money in the divorce (it’s never stated how much she has, or how she earned it, but it’s enough to worry her). Meanwhile Chelsea is trying to convince Helena that the best way to get over David is to go out and get laid, although Helena insists that she’s not interested in men right now.

Although once after walking in on Chelsea and Tanner having sex in the kitchen, she accepts their invitation to join them for a threesome.

The big PLOT TWIST is that we find out that Kristen is having an affair with David. This is part of some scheme to get info against Helena that David can use in a divorce.

That could make this an interesting story, but the film never really explores this development. It’s clear that Helena never cheated on David, so there’s nothing for Kristen to find out. And Kristen and David are pretty reckless, as Kristen appears to work out of her home, which is where David goes to meet her for sex, even on days when Helena is scheduled to come over for an appoint. This is how they caught, as one day, after giving Helena a ride to Kristen’s, Chelsea happens to see David sneaking out the back. Chelsea tells Helena when she gets back home, and they come up with a plan where Chelsea invites David over and seduces him while Kristen secretly videotapes them. Helen then show Kristen the videotape, and blackmails her to stop these scheme and get David agree to a fair 50/50 split. And then Helena starts a new relationship with Tanner. THE END.

So, the story was bland. There’s never any emotional stakes or anything, stuff just happens. The cast are all fine, Beverly Lynn always does a good job, and Raymond Balboa also stands out with his performance, but none of them are given much to work with.

We get 8 sex scenes. Beverly Lynn has four, three with Raymond Balboa, and the threesome with him and Aurora Snow. Snow also has one with Christian Cage and one with Marcus London. London and Darryl Hanah have two together. The scenes are fine, but ultimately pretty routine. Nothing that stands out.

Overall this film is just…okay. Chacebook rating: THREE STARS
