INDIE COMICS

Disney Villains: Maleficent #1

Here’s a surprising new comic book series, I don’t know if it’s an ongoing series or a miniseries, I didn’t even know it was coming out until I saw it on Amazon today. I always liked Disney’s Maleficent character, so I thought I’d check it out.

It’s written and drawn by Soo Lee, a creator whose work I am not familiar with, but I’m very impressed with her artwork in this comic, the environment is suitably spooky and her Maleficent is equally regal, scary, and, yes, sexy.

As for the story, a young man named Reynard is out searching for adventure, the book opens with him being chased through the woods by some wild animals on a dark night. Just when he’s surrounded and all seems lost, Maleficent appears and saves him. She’s immediately impressed by the young adventurer’s bravery, as he knows who she is but isn’t afraid. She even gives him a gift, in the form of a magical compass to aid him in his travels. But foolish Reynard isn’t satisfied with that and uses the compass to find his way to Maleficent’s castle, where he sneaks inside and attempts to steal Maleficent’s magic staff.

I won’t spoil how this ends, I’ll just say that it’s a clever ending that works on two levels. It could be a cliffhanger that will be continued next issue or it could be an ending to a single-issue story. Either way, I definitely plan to check out the next issue to find out. This is a comic book for fairy tale fans of all ages.

Chacebook rating: FIVE STARS
