Written by Anthony L. Greene and directed by Chris Tudor, this episode stars with Mary Shannon as Dr. Grace Reese, a therapist who specializes in relationship issues. She calls into Veronica’s show, which times when “crossing the line” led to the best sex you’ve ever had.
Grace talks about a patient she had a young man named Kevin (played by Glen Meadows). Kevin had problems with commitment, even though he claimed he wanted a serious relationship. Being an attractive firefighter, he had no trouble getting dates or getting women into bed, yet he always found some reason to reject the women afterward. At the time this story begins, Grace had been treating Kevin for a month, and most of their sessions were just him going over his latest sexual conquest. We get two sex scenes from him. One is with Monique Alexander, who plays a woman that Kevin brought up to cook dinner for, and they end up having sex on his kitchen counter. The other is with Dru Berrymore, who plays a woman that he has sex with outside of his fire station.
Meanwhile, we get a glimpse into Grace’s home life. Living alone, she doesn’t have much luck with relationships herself. One night we see her calling and leaving a message on the answering machine of a man she recently went out with, asking to see him again. but he doesn’t return her call, and she ends up eating dinner alone. Another night, after her latest session with Kevin, we see her in her bathtub, taking a bubble bath, where she starts to fantasize about Kevin coming in and joining her. After this, she tells Kevin that she can’t treat him anymore and refers him to a new (male) therapist.
A few weeks pass, and at one point, Grace casually drops by the fire station to see how Kevin is doing; he’s still surprised at her dropping him as a patient and says he doesn’t bother going to therapy anymore, which makes her feel guilty. One night, she’s surprised to hear a fire truck outside of her home,, and sees that there was some kind of emergency (presumably a fire, although we don’t see one; I guess the show didn’t have the budget for that). Going outside, she sees Kevin, who happens to be one of the firefighters on the scene. They make eye contact and smile at each other. Later, Kevin knocks on her door, and she lets him in. She confesses that the reason she dropped him as a patient was because she was developing feelings for him, and confesses that he felt the same. And they have sex. The episode ends with Grace telling Veronica that she and Kevin have been together ever since and recently got engaged.
It’s a decent but average episode. The story was utterly predictable from the start. I knew Grace and Kevin would end up together despite the ethical implications that could risk Grace’s career (even if we know she didn’t sleep with Kevin while he was her patient, it still looks bad). The sex scenes were hot enough, but even with Dru Berrymore, who is one of my favorites, nothing really stood out to me enough to make this must-watch episode.
