Space Bandits #4

I noticed that I never finished reviewing this miniseries, with just two issues to go. Oh well, better late than never, right? I’ve noted before that the basic story is a typical revenge action thriller. Two criminals, Cody Blue and Thena Cole, get betrayed by their respective partners and sent to jail. They team up to escape together to then track down their former allies and murder them. But then by setting the story in outer space and making most of the characters aliens, now it’s a space opera odyssey. That’s pretty clever, I must admit.

There will be some spoilers here, because it’s been so long anyway.

Picking up where we left off, our “heroes” are in The Rob and Charlie, a large spaceship/bordello, where any kind of drugs or sex you could possibly want is available for the right price. This is where they’ve tracked down Bowser Weex, a member of Cody’s old gang, and have him at gunpoint. But it turns out that Bowser has a few tricks up his sleeve, which makes killing him a lot more complicated than they expected it to be. I won’t spoil the details, but through some quick thinking and unexpected aid, the ladies prevail. And thus they take their leave and head off for the two remaining targets, starting with Thena’s partner and ex-lover, Viggo Lust.

They manage to find Viggo, he’s on a planet that belongs to one of the richest royal princesses in the galaxy, and they’re about to get married. The ladies confront him and when he sees Thena, Viggo claims that he’s a victim, that he was kidnapped by the Princess’ men 6 months ago, which is why he wasn’t able to help Thena escape the last time. According to him, he never betrayed her, and has been trying to escape because the Princess (who is much older than him) is forcing him to marry her after which she plans to eat him.

It seems as if the ladies believe his story, and they join him in his plan to finally escape and steal the Princess’ fortune. But it immediately seemed obvious to me that he was lying. And, sure, enough, when the ladies leave, we see that Viggo is not only lying, but he’s teamed up with Kaiser Crow, the leader of the gang that betrayed Cody and they’re planning to double-cross the ladies again. I’ll predict right now that Cody and Thena know this and will be prepared for it, but we’ll see.

I’d forgotten how much I was liking this series when it came out. I find that Mark Millar can be a bit hit or miss with me, but this is one of his good books, and I love Matteo Scalera’s artwork on it. Chacebook rating: FIVE STARS
