SOFTCORE TELEVISION

LINGERIE season 1, episode 1: PICTURE PERFECT

Here’s a softcore series that’s been on my “to watch” list for quite a while. Created by John Quinn, who worked on softcore shows like Sin City Diaries and Passion Cove, and also co-produced the movie Crack House, this series debuted in March 2000 on Cinemax and ran for two scenes. I’d heard of it, but never watched it at the time. But I got a DVD of the first season, so I’m going to watch and review the episodes here. I’m basically going into this blind, with no previous knowledge of what the show is about.

In this first episode, which was written by Quinn and directed by Trevor Cornish, we meet our lead character, Lacey Summers (Jennifer Korbin), a lingerie designer. As the episode begins, she’s overseeing a fashion shoot in her apartment. Michael Murray Scratch plays Jason, her photographer (and FWB), and Veronika London is Cindy, the model wearing the lingerie that Lacey designed. Denise Cobar plays Lacey’s friend Marilyn, and it looks like she works for some fashion magazine that is waiting to print these photos, and they’re on a bit of a deadline.

Matt Fitzgerald is Lacey’s younger brother Cody. He does handiwork for Lacey, although it’s unclear if that’s all he does or if he has some other job. A running plot through this episode is that it’s cold in Lacey’s studio and they’re waiting for Cody to come and fix the A.C. It’s also established that Cody is a known womanizer. We first see him in his apartment having sex with a woman named Joanne (Emily MacLeod) in his apartment, and then later in the episode he catches Cindy stealing some of the lingerie, and she gets him to agree not to tell Lacey by having sex with him.

We also meet Jeffery (Geoff Stevens), another friend of Lacey’s, but other than them being flamboyantly gay, I’m not sure what his role in this series is. And the last major player appears to be Vanessa (Lana Tailor), she’s an aspiring actress from Seattle, who has just recently moved to NY to pursue her career. The episode ends with her arriving at Lacey’s place, and catching Jason in the kitchen nude, as he and Lacey had just finished having sex and they weren’t expecting her so soon.

We get four sex scenes, as I noted Fitzgerald has two, one with McLeoud and one with London.
Jennifer Korbin and Michael Murray have one scene together. And there’s a lesbian scene between Lana Tailor and Mia Presley, who plays Vanessa’s former roommate back in Seattle, Josie. They also had a sexual relationship and we see their last time together before Vanessa leaves for NY.

The sex scenes are hot, but I can’t say I’m impressed with the story yet. This episode feels like it’s mostly set up, introducing us to the main characters, so on that level it was fine. But I’m not sure what the ongoing story of the series will be yet. I also have to say that when it comes to dialog, none of the actors in this show were terribly convincing. I’m going to need to see how the episodes progress before I can make a judgment on how good this series will be overall. So for now it just gets an average Chacebook rating of THREE STARS
