MONARCH #6

This issue, the finale of this 6-part miniseries, was published on Wednesday, but it’s taken me until now to review it because, well, I’m disappointed, and I hate to have to say that.

This series started off well, initially coming off like Boyz N The Hood meets War of The World, with a young orphan boy named Travon trying to survive in the streets of Compton after aliens invade and destroy everything. But I noted how, when the secret was revealed that Travon himself is an alien, things got confusing. I was still mostly enjoying the series, but stated with the previous issue that I hoped writer Rodney Barnes would manage to pull it all together in a satisfactory conclusion but, in my opinion, he didn’t.

I’m not going to go too deep into details, but basically, everything gets wrapped up in a way that’s far too simple. Travon somehow convinces the rest of his species to let him go, and to leave Earth alone, even though they need a new planet to survive. Then he tells his friends, who quickly forgive him for being an alien, they even forgive Todd, the crazy White boy who was just trying to kill them all. Apparently, all he needed was a hug. Travon finds and saves Miss Wilamae and Marli, as well as his former bully Zion, and the issue ends with a big group shot of everyone smiling and…that’s it?

I mean, the world is still devastated, but at least Travon’s got his friends back, so it’s all good now?

I’m sorry, but this ending is lame, and ruins this whole series for me, it just feels pointless now. If you haven’t read it yet, I can’t recommend it (other than Alex Lins’ artwork, which is still good).
