Dark Spider # 1: With A Vengeance

Today I’m reviewing this latest production from Lawful Evil comics, it’s an issue focusing on their flagship superhero, Dark Spider. Written by Ra’Chaun Rogers and drawn by Martin Patron, the issue opens with Jamal, Dark Spider’s secret identity, going to work at his job teaching English. Once there, his boss (I guess she’s the Principal?) introduces him to her daughter, a young woman named Keisha, an aspiring author, in a clear attempt to set them up that Keisha wants no part of. After a brief introduction, Keisha leaves and Jamal teaches his class.

Later that night, Dark Spider is on patrol, swinging across the rooftops of the city, when he happens across a car chase. Three armed men who just committed a crime a racing from the cops. Coincidentally, Keisha is just leaving the bar where she works as a bartender, and almost gets hit by the car but Dark Spider saves her. After stopping the crooks, and getting berated by the ungrateful police for all the damage that was caused, Dark Spider barely misses getting shot by some sniper.

The gunman turns out to be a big muscular masked man, with two long knives, who seems desperate to kill Dark Spider. A brutal fight ensues, in which Dark Spider is clearly outclassed by this stranger, and he only barely survives thanks to the timely intervention of Keisha, whom he then has drive him to a safe house he has in the city to recover from his wounds, ending on a cliffhanger.

This is an entraining issue, heaving on action but Rogers also gives the characters some emotional depth, as we see Jamal is still haunted by the death of his parents and we see Keisha’s frustration with her mother, who dismisses her writing ambitions and thinks she should focus on just finding a good man. The mystery of the masked man who attacked Dark Spider is also compelling. Martin Patron shows himself to be one of the better artists that Lawful Evil has employed, doing a good job with the action in this issue, I hope to see him return.

Like their previous books, this issue is for adults only. We get a full page of Keisha getting naked and masturbating with a vibrator, in which she shows everything (and reveals that she’s pierced in some interesting places). However, strangely, in a later scene when she takes a shower, the nudity is only implied.

The 34-page comic also features pin-ups of Dark Spider from artists Jackson Brandao, Adam Markiewicz, Romar Olasiman, Peter Cacho, and Demetrius Watkins.

This is an impressive indie comic, worth buying. Chacebook rating: FOUR STARS
