DARK HORSE COMICS

House of Fear: Attack of the Killer Snowmen

Rewatching JACK FROST recently reminded me of this comic that I bought years ago. It was originally released in 2017, under the independent publisher, Ten31 Publishing, which is when I got it. I think it may have originated as a Kickstarter campaign. I only just now found out that it got re-released by Dark Horse Comics in 2019, and it looks like some other issues followed it.

Written by James Powell and drawn by Jethro Morales, this is an all-ages horror comic. It takes place on a snowy winter day, as three kids, boys Wyatt and Tristian and a girl named Andi, are tossing a football around in the snow. It’s not clear how old any of them all, from the artwork I’d guess maybe 12-14. While tackling each other they accidentally run into and destroy a snowman that was built by a boy named Jacob. Apparently, he’s new in town and is considered a bit of an outcast. The kids apologize and offer to help rebuild his snowman, but he just storms off. Jacob was carrying a book in his hands, and Tristan remarks that he overheard him refer to it as a spellbook (and he’s drawn to show a slight resemblance to Harry Potter, I think).

Wyatt, Tristan, and Andi continue to play outside, having a snowball fight. Tristan’s mother comes out with a jug of hot chocolate for them and then says she and Tristan’s father are going out shopping. After she leaves, a big snowstorm briefly erupts out of nowhere, and when it stops, they find themselves being attacked by three living evil-looking snowmen. Armed with snow shovels, their wits, and water guns filled with hot chocolate, the kids bravely fight back against the snowmen, but just when they think they’ve won the battle, an even greater threat appears.

This is a fun book, a complete single-issue story, told in 26 pages, that both older and younger fans should enjoy. Great story and artwork. This is the kind of book I think the industry needs more of! Chacebook rating: FIVE STARS
